Artificial leather, also known as textile leather, has a surface resembling real leather. The surface is usually PVC or polyurethane foam with a closed film-like layer for abrasion resistance. It is hard-wearing, easy to clean and much cheaper than real leather.

The Artificial Leather Material

Imitation leather is a material with a similar appearance and surface to real leather. It is hard-wearing and more resistant to wear and tear than natural leather, and is available at a much lower price. The top layer of leatherette is usually plastic and the back is covered with textile. The leatherette material is very easy to clean, with soapy water to remove dirt. It is advisable to use leatherette care and cleaning products to preserve the condition of the leatherette and to avoid damage and cracks. Leatherette is used for a variety of purposes, depending on its resistance to wear. It can be used indoors and outdoors. For outdoor use, it is important that the leatherette fabric is resistant to UV radiation and moisture. There are also fire-resistant and flame-retardant fabrics for use in factories and workshops. The leatherette used for upholstery on boats is not damaged by salt water.

Artificial Leather Textile – The Versatile Fabric

Faux leather textiles are also used for upholstering furniture, interior accessories and car upholstery. Faux leather used in the fashion industry should not be confused with faux leather for furniture! The headboards of sofas, armchairs, sofas, dining chairs or double beds are covered with leatherette which is highly resistant to abrasion. Fabrics are tested in the so-called Martindale test. Textiles marked with a value of over 30 000 cycles are already very hard-wearing. Polo faux leather has a wear resistance of 60 000, which means that it is suitable for more demanding environments, such as restaurants, waiting rooms, hotels, offices and meeting rooms. The Martindale value of 35,000 to 55,000 cycles means a lifespan of around 7-12 years of average use, which shows that Polo faux leather is a very robust and hard-wearing textile. When choosing the colour of your leatherette, match it to the style of your home or interior.

The elasticity and strength of faux leathers depend on the backing material, the strongest is the fabric backed faux leather, which stretches the least. Synthetic leathers are not breathable and do not allow water to pass through. Unless treated with a special heat-protection process, they generally do not take heat fluctuations and temperature extremes well.
