The bass trap or deep absorbent membrane is indispensable for achieving clear sound. It allows us to realize the most important and at the same time most difficult task in setting up proper acoustics: dampening deep sounds.

Why Do We Need to Dampen Deep Sounds?

For sounds below 150Hz, the reverberation time increases.

In practice, this means that in the room we do not hear the real quantity and quality of deep sounds, but rather the sound of the room. Distorted bass can ruin the audio experience, neither the movie nor the music can be fully enjoyed.

How Do Deep Absorbent Membranes Help?

We primarily work with deep absorbent membranes for the dampening of reverberations. A deep absorbent membrane is an acoustic element that reduces excessive sound waves within a narrower frequency range.

Compared to acoustic membranes – wideband acoustic panels are not able to dampen the sub-bass frequency effectively – within these ranges, the membranes absorb deep sounds with significantly higher efficiency.

Why Aren’t Acoustic Foam, Sponge, or Hungarocell Suitable Solutions?

The wavelength of deep sounds is larger than that of high frequencies. Therefore, to absorb deep sounds, we need acoustic panels made of different types of materials. The typical foam, which has a density of 20-30kg/m^3, is incapable of absorbing deep sounds. In our range, we offer the extra high-density 80kg/m^3 Elitexa sound insulation foam; due to its exceptional density, it is able to absorb even the deep sounds.

Deep sounds can only be dampened with dense fibrous high-specific-weight acoustic absorbing materials or with a tuned acoustic membrane.

Many make the mistake of plastering their walls with acoustic foam, but the expected effect is not achieved. On the contrary, soft, light, and pliable structures like sponge, hungarocell, and acoustic foam absorb higher sounds, which exacerbates the deep sounds they originally intended to dampen.

How to Use the Deep Absorbent Membranes?

• First, dampen the deep sounds in the corners, then on the side walls – primarily on the front side – and behind the listener’s position.
• If possible, do not place the Deep Absorbent Membranes directly against the wall; maintain a distance of at least 10 cm.
• Do not forget about one of the most critical parts of the room, the ceiling. Since this area is empty, standing waves can spread without obstruction, thereby causing significant peaks or dips in the deep sound ranges.

Materials We Use:

Depending on the type, bass traps can be made from wood and leather. The main challenge is to dampen sounds below 70 Hz, as high-density fibrous absorbing materials are not suitable for this.

However, deep sound-absorbing membrane sheets made of wood or leather can dampen unwanted deep sound waves passing through by vibrating, starting from as low as 30Hz. Wooden membranes dampen sounds from 30-200Hz, while faux leather membranes work in the range of 30-600Hz.
