Klipsch R-120SW Active Subwoofer Review

We tested the Klipsch R-120SW active subwoofer a few weeks ago. The testing took place in a renovated family house in Telki, Pest County. One of our company’s repeat customers was keen to know more about the performance of the Klipsch subwoofer freshly purchased for his home cinema, and invited us to his home for testing. The owner,Tamás Szikszai-Horváth, is gradually developing his home cinema system. Corner bass traps, ceiling and wall mounted diffuser and front acoustic panels provided the ideal sound for the room. In order to achieve a real cinematic experience, we have proposed to place acoustic curtains in front of the large window surfaces to further improve acoustics, and create the required darkness for the cinema room with special woven home textiles.

Let’s look at the subwoofer

Klipsch 120SW – Powerful Bass with Classic American Engineering
Klipsch has been crafting high-quality speakers since 1946, so it’s safe to say they’re anything but newcomers in the audio world. The 120SW subwoofer is a great example of their experience and design philosophy.
The cabinet is substantial, with each side measuring around half a meter, and features a striking 30 cm (12-inch) subwoofer cone finished in a signature brass color. The enclosure is made from MDF and wrapped in black, glossy vinyl that is both scratch-resistant and fingerprint-proof—a welcome surprise that helps keep the speaker looking clean with minimal effort.
The reinforced cabinet construction minimizes unwanted resonance, resulting in tighter, cleaner bass. Rubber feet provide added stability and protect wood flooring from scratches.
The subwoofer features a rigid, lightweight IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) cone with a concave, copper-vaporized diaphragm. It is driven by a robust 400-watt digital amplifier, delivering punchy, controlled low-frequency performance. An LED indicator on the front panel displays the power status—on or standby—at a glance.

On the back panel of the Klipsch 120SW, you’ll find a large reflex port, which significantly reduces air turbulence and distortion—allowing the bass to remain deep yet controlled. The rear interface also includes frequency control, power and function switches, and a phase adjustment knob for optimal integration with other speakers.
Connections include L/R line-level inputs for stereo amplifiers and an LFE input for AV receivers, offering flexibility for different setups. The frequency response ranges from 29 to 120 Hz, with 200 watts RMS power and 400 watts peak power, delivering a maximum sound pressure level of 116 dB.
The subwoofer sits on large black spikes that provide full isolation from the floor, minimizing vibration transmission. The minimalist design is sleek and versatile, blending seamlessly into nearly any room, regardless of interior style or color scheme. At 14 kg, the speaker has a solid, substantial presence without being cumbersome.
If we were to score the design alone, it would clearly deserve a 5 out of 5.
Sound Test

Sound Test
We began our testing session with classical music, playing Toreador from Bizet’s opera Carmen (Act 3/4). The Klipsch 120SW delivered full-bodied, powerful, and clean bass, while the wind instruments and orchestral textures came through with clarity and nuance. The overall sound reproduction was faithful and dynamic, although the bass felt slightly over-controlled at times—yet this did not negatively affect the performance of the other frequency ranges.
Next, we moved on to modern pop, choosing Physical by Dua Lipa. Once again, the subwoofer impressed us with its penetrating, natural bass that remained distortion-free even at high volumes. The low end was punchy yet smooth, and never overpowering—a rare balance that’s especially appreciated in smaller rooms.
Subwoofers play a crucial role in home theater systems, so it’s important to select one that delivers both power and precision. The 120SW certainly fits that description.
To test its cinematic performance, we screened the 2018 blockbuster Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa. The subwoofer provided an exceptionally immersive experience—every water splash, impact, and explosion felt lifelike and spatially accurate. The moment Aquaman plunged into the sea, it felt as though the splash occurred right beside us. The soundtracks and effects were crystal clear, with a well-separated, richly layered soundstage.

While watching the 2018 action-packed Tomb Raider, the authentic and balanced bass made us feel like active participants in the adventure. Similarly, during Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), the colorful, crystal-clear sound and rich soundtrack reproduction showcased the subwoofer’s ability to enhance cinematic detail without overwhelming the mids or highs. The result was immersion without excess.
Advantages and Disadvantages
The Klipsch R-120SW subwoofer offers several compelling advantages in its price category:
- Clear, distortion-free bass
- Creates a truly cinematic experience
- Equally suitable for music listening
- Beautiful craftsmanship
- Scratch- and fingerprint-resistant finish
Drawbacks:
- Relatively heavy
- Struggles to reproduce sounds below 29 Hz
Summary
All in all, the Klipsch R-120SW is an aesthetically pleasing, high-performance subwoofer and a reliable addition to any home theater setup. It produces realistic, full-bodied, and controlled bass, which blends perfectly with mid and high frequencies without overpowering them. For its performance and build quality, it’s absolutely worth the investment.
If we had to rate it, we would confidently give the Klipsch R-120SW a 4.9 out of 5.
