NAD-T787 AMPLIFIER

Design and Features

The exterior of this 7-channel amplifier is characterized by a simple yet elegant aesthetic, highlighted by a large volume-control dial on the front panel. Unlike some other models, there is no hinged lid concealing additional buttons. The large display is easy to read, and the menu system is clear and intuitive. The control buttons have excellent sensitivity, making navigation effortless. The unit itself is relatively large and robust, weighing 25.2 pounds (approximately 11.4 kg).

This powerful amplifier delivers 200 watts per channel into 8 Ohms, providing outstanding audio performance. Thanks to its modular design, it can be expanded further with additional modules such as HD Audio, High-End Audio, Video, 3D, HDMI expansion, and High-End Video, ensuring the device remains up-to-date with current technologies.

Connectivity and Specifications

The amplifier features gold-plated connectors, offering excellent conductivity and durability. It has an impressive signal-to-noise ratio of 93 dB, and a frequency response ranging from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Connectivity options include an AM/FM radio tuner, seven HDMI inputs, three component video inputs, four S-video inputs, and three optical and three coaxial digital inputs. Additionally, the device is equipped with a headphone jack, seven-channel outputs, and two subwoofer outputs.

Behind a discreet, protruding panel, you’ll find an additional A/V input. The unit supports 3D content and 1080p/24 resolution, as well as audio decoding via Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD formats. The AV receiver also includes a convenient multi-room function. To ensure optimal setup, it features an automatic speaker calibration system complete with a measuring microphone. Furthermore, the amplifier utilizes a large toroidal transformer for reliable, high-quality power delivery.

Audyssey Program

NAD surround system

The device is equipped with XM and iPod ports, and features the Audyssey MultiEQ XT calibration system for precise room correction. A measuring microphone, included in the package, assists with setup and ensures optimal sound calibration.

Thanks to the EARS surround mode, the receiver can convert stereo sources into multi-channel audio, creating a more immersive listening experience. In Direct Mode, it can transmit non-digital analog signals, making it compatible with turntables or phono preamplifiers.

Overall, the setup process is extremely simple and user-friendly, posing no difficulties during installation.

The NAD T787 comes with two remote controls: one dedicated to controlling the second zone, and a larger, standard remote for the main system. The primary remote is backlit, and the light activates almost instantly when picked up. Users can also adjust the backlight duration based on preference. It operates with four AA batteries, although the batteries tend to sit a bit loosely in the compartment, which can cause slight wobbling. Despite this, the remote fits comfortably in the hand, and the button layout is logical and user-friendly.

The room calibration settings provided by the system were surprisingly accurate. This came as a pleasant surprise, since most room correction programs primarily measure sound pressure levels and are generally unable to fully correct acoustic issues on their own. Therefore, if you’re aiming for the best possible movie or music experience, it’s essential to also invest in proper acoustic treatment for your listening environment.

Test

We tested the amplifier in an average living room located in an apartment of an old condominium. The walls were made of brick, the furnishings were classically elegant. We gave the owner some tips on how to improve the acoustics, as the measurement resulted in reflections and standing waves that significantly degraded the sound. We told him that it would definitely be worthwhile to place sound-absorbing and diffuser panels on the walls. We started testing with a pair of Dali Oberon 7 standing speakers and a Velodyne SPL 1200 Ultra subwoofer.

The test started with the American adventure movie The Mummy- The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor released in 2008. We experienced tight, precise sounds, proper dynamics and intense basses. The amplifier provided solid bass notes and a natural, lifelike sound. We then watched the romantic musical Coyote Ugly. We were also curious to know how the soundtracks sounded, and were not disappointed. We enjoyed accentuated mid-ranges, percussive basses and balanced clear sound.

For the benefit of audio fans, we also tested the amplifier for music. We listened to the song Natural by Imagine Dragons. The device delivered a very nice, balanced stereo picture, basses were also absolutely in place and sounded quite intense, tight and accurate. However, we also discovered flaws in the sound. The treble was often too vivid and we lacked detail and subtlety.

Final Impressions

The NAD T787 AV receiver features a pleasant, minimalist exterior design with a simple and clean look. During our testing, we experienced tight sound reproduction, deep and powerful bass, and well-emphasized midrange tones. Thanks to its resonance-free chassis, the unit delivered clear, distortion-free performance. The stereo sound was equally impressive, with harmonious and well-balanced audio across the spectrum.

We observed that the higher the sound pressure level (SPL), the better the amplifier performed—a sign of its robust power handling. However, there is still room for improvement when it comes to detail and subtlety, particularly in the higher frequencies, which at times sounded too vivid or even harsh. Another noticeable drawback was the lack of certain features. At this price point, we expected more extensive functionality.

When choosing an amplifier, it’s important to consider your primary use—listening to stereo music or watching movies. Fortunately, the T787 excels in both areas, making it a versatile option for demanding users.
