Sonos Playbar Sound Projector Review

Sonos Playbar Sound Projector Review
Based in California, Sonos is a market leader in premium audio and hi-fi products. As we wrap up this week’s series of brand evaluations, we turn our attention to the Sonos Playbar—a high-performance soundbar designed for modern home entertainment.
Features
When connected to a modern flat-screen TV, the Sonos Playbar delivers impressive, cinema-quality sound. Installation is remarkably simple, requiring only an optical audio cable. The Playbar supports both Dolby Digital surround and stereo audio modes, providing flexibility for various content types.
Internally, the Playbar is equipped with:
- 6 mid-range drivers (center channel)
- 3 tweeters for crisp highs
- 9 Class-D digital amplifiers for clean, efficient power
Together, these components simulate a speaker array, producing immersive audio that aligns perfectly with on-screen action—enhancing both clarity and realism.
The Sonos app, available on Android and iOS, allows for seamless setup, system optimization, and full control of the speaker. With integrated music streaming capabilities, you can easily access platforms like iTunes, Tidal, Deezer, and Spotify directly from the speaker itself.
Compatible with other Sonos ecosystem products, the Playbar can be used as the foundation for a comprehensive multi-room or surround sound system. Wireless connectivity is available via the Sonos BRIDGE, and users can fine-tune bass, treble, and volume levels to suit their environment. An Auto Play function is also included, allowing users to decide whether TV audio should start automatically upon power-up.

It works with most infrared remote controls and can also be controlled with the Sonos Controller APP – available on Android devices, as well as on iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Plays all sources connected to the HDTV. (satellite set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and game consoles). The specs: power supply AC 100-240V at 50-60Hz, dimensions 900 mm x 85 mm x 140 mm, and weight 5400 g.

Unfortunately, there is only one way to connect to a TV, and that is through a digital optical cable. There is also an advantage to this simplicity, as only one cable connects the TV to the Playbar – but this is a disadvantage when multiple devices are connected with multiple HDMI inputs and HDMI outputs.
Sonos Playbar sound
This is a really nicely crafted unit designed in a stripped-down style. Can also be wall-mounted with an optional bracket or laid in front of your TV, the Playbar features built-in accelerometers that automatically detect the direction and adjust the sound accordingly.

Acoustic conditions at the test site were in order, courtesy of leather membrane sound-absorbing panels and acoustic wood diffusers. Bass traps in the corners provided proper handling of deep sounds.
The acoustics of a room is ideal if we treat the walls, corners and ceiling with products made specifically for acoustic purposes. It is also recommended to place acoustic curtains in front of the windows and the patio doors. The way the speakers are positioned, especially the distance between the speakers and the wall or the person listening to the music, are also key metrics to observe to obtain sound quality!
We tried Sonos Playbar for both watching movies and listening to music. We did note that the Playbar sounded best when directed outward with the wider rim.

Connectivity & Control Options
In addition to its core features, the Sonos Playbar includes a pair of Ethernet ports, allowing you to connect additional devices—such as a smart TV—to the internet through the Sonos network. This makes integration with other smart devices seamless and efficient.
An infrared (IR) sensor enables the Playbar to respond to your TV’s remote control volume buttons, eliminating the need for extra remotes. To further enhance usability, a built-in IR repeater ensures that remote signals reach the TV, even if the Playbar is blocking the TV’s IR sensor.
However, it’s important to note that the Playbar does not support voice control. For integration with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Apple Siri, you’ll need to upgrade to the Sonos Beam, which includes those smart features.
Sound Quality & Expansion Potential
The Sonos Playbar offers an exceptionally broad frequency range, delivering detailed, dynamic, and spacious sound. It performs well with both dialogue and music, and often creates an impression of height in its soundstage, especially when placed flat—though this may result in sound projection that feels slightly upward rather than forward.
For a soundbar in its class, the Playbar delivers respectable bass performance, but it struggles with ultra-low frequencies. For users seeking deeper, more impactful bass, the Sonos Sub is a highly recommended addition. Pairing the Sub with the Playbar through the Sonos app is quick and easy, and the improvement in low-end performance is immediately noticeable.

Audio Format Support & Limitations
The Sonos Playbar is capable of decoding Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and can also generate pseudo-surround sound from standard stereo signals, offering a convincing immersive experience in most setups.
However, it’s important to highlight a few limitations. The Playbar does not support DTS audio or high-definition formats such as Dolby TrueHD. This shortcoming is likely due to the bandwidth constraints of the optical audio connection, which is the only audio input available on the Playbar.
Another critical consideration: many modern TVs only output stereo audio via their optical output, even if the content includes a 5.1 signal. To ensure proper Dolby Digital 5.1 playback, you must connect your set-top box, Blu-ray player, or DVD player directly to the Playbar, bypassing the TV’s internal audio routing altogether.

Summary

Verdict
Setting up the Sonos Playbar can take a bit of patience, but once configured, it becomes easy to control and integrate into your system. The clean and elegant design complements most modern interiors, and it offers flexible placement options—either mounted on the wall or laid flat in front of the TV.
In terms of performance, the Playbar delivers clear and dynamic sound, particularly enhancing TV audio and supporting music streaming. However, for optimal bass response, pairing it with a Sonos Sub is strongly recommended. While the Playbar can decode Dolby Digital 5.1 signals, it does not create a true surround sound experience on its own, and does not support DTS or higher-resolution formats like Dolby TrueHD.
Compared to traditional stereo systems with separate amplifiers and wired speakers, the Playbar falls short in both spatial depth and volume power. Its sound depends heavily on placement, and it may not fit comfortably under every TV.
For those prioritizing compact size, smart features, and voice control, the Sonos Beam may be a more appealing alternative. It’s a more modern, integrated solution in a smaller package.
