BenQ MH530 Projector Review
BenQ is a well-known Taiwanese multinational company that produces a wide range of electronics, computing, and communication devices. Founded in 1984, the brand now has a global presence in over 100 countries.
The BenQ MH530 is a compact, single-chip DLP projector capable of delivering vibrant, sharp, and detailed Full HD images. While its native contrast ratio and black levels are average, it compensates with ample brightness, making it suitable for use even in daylit rooms or under lamplight conditions.

Design

The compact, single-chip DLP architecture of the BenQ MH530 makes it especially effective for presentations, excelling with graphs, charts, and pie visuals. It also pairs well with Blu-ray players and gaming consoles, making it a versatile option for both professional and entertainment use.
For users who travel frequently, the MH530 is highly portable, measuring just 283 x 95 x 222 mm and weighing only 5 kg. Its sleek, elegant white finish adds a modern touch, suitable for any setting.
One notable drawback is the presence of only a single HDMI input. While this may be sufficient for basic use, two HDMI ports would be considered standard and more practical, especially for users who frequently switch between devices.

The back panel has audio inputs and outputs, as well as a mini USB port for software upgrades, and an RS232 port.
Thanks to a single HDMI input, Full HD resolution and BrilliantColor processing is available, furthermore, it is capable of excellent HD images squeezed from a Blu-ray player or a game console. It also has a built-in speaker, but the performance of the speaker is quite poor, suitable for occasional use, such as a presentation. The MH530 is also capable of 3D, although no 3D glasses are included.
Settings

The MH530 has keystone correction, but unfortunately it causes image distortion. However, using the MH530 is very simple – all you have to do is press the buttons on the remote control and the image will start moving up or down. The same is true with the left and right volume buttons on the built-in speaker.
Cinema or sRGB presets are suitable for watching any video. There are some energy-saving modes, including SmartEco, and BenQ’s BrilliantColour feature increases colour saturation and contrast without any colour distortion.

Energy Saving Modes
The BenQ MH530 features advanced SmartEco™ technology, which provides lower operating costs, optimized lamp life, and superior image quality—all while delivering vivid brightness. This intelligent system enables up to 70% energy savings, making the projector both eco-friendly and cost-effective.
- SmartEco Mode
In SmartEco mode, the projector automatically adjusts lamp power based on content requirements to deliver the best possible contrast ratio without wasting energy. - Lamp Saving Mode
This mode modifies lamp brightness dynamically according to on-screen content. As a result, it can extend lamp life by up to 50%, reducing replacement costs and maintenance frequency. - Eco Blank Mode
When the projector is not actively in use, Eco Blank Mode dims the screen and reduces energy consumption by up to 70%. It can be activated manually or automatically if no input signal is detected within three minutes of startup. This feature also helps to extend the lamp’s lifespan significantly.
In standby mode, power consumption drops to less than 0.5W, ensuring minimal energy use when the projector is idle.
Blu-ray Full HD 3D Support
The BenQ MH530 is compatible with Blu-ray Full HD 3D content, allowing users to enjoy immersive 3D experiences right at home or in professional environments. With the proper 3D glasses and player, viewers can enjoy vivid, lifelike 3D visuals, making the projector a solid choice for both home entertainment and presentation purposes.

The BenQ MH530’s latest DLP® technology supports 3D display, and 3D scenes can be viewed using 3D glasses.

DLP Technology
Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a widely adopted technology in the projector industry and is also used in IMAX theaters and digital cinema systems. At the heart of the BenQ MH530 lies this same DLP technology, delivering dependable performance and reliable image reproduction.
Thanks to the micro-mirrors on the DMD chip and the fully sealed DLP engine, BenQ DLP projectors offer long-lasting performance without degradation in image quality. The sealed engine also protects against dust and high operating temperatures, making the MH530 highly durable in various environments.

BenQ MH530 Performance
The BenQ MH530 performs impressively in bright environments. Its 3200 ANSI lumens brightness ensures a clear and vibrant picture, even when used indoors during the day or under strong ambient light—especially when set to the maximum lamp brightness.
However, this brightness comes with trade-offs. In low-light conditions, the native contrast is only average. Switching to SmartEco mode helps improve contrast, and the inclusion of BrilliantColor™ technology further enhances image depth and color performance. While dark scenes may appear slightly grainy—a common limitation of single-chip DLP systems—the overall image detail is commendable.
Motion resolution is another strong point, with smooth playback that makes it suitable for films and fast-paced video. Still, there is one notable downside: the “rainbow effect”, which can occasionally appear as brief flashes of color, particularly in scenes with high contrast or fast movement. This visual artifact may be distracting to sensitive viewers.

The MH530 is a versatile projector: the native aspect ratio is 16: 9, making it perfect for movies and TV shows as well. With 3200 ANSI lumens of brightness and a 10,000: 1 contrast ratio, the MH530 also performs well when watching movies, although the colours and contrast fall short of expectations.
The MH530 has 3D colour management settings, (hue, saturation, and gain), as well as some interesting lamp modes that really help – especially SmartEco mode, which reduces power consumption by 70%.
The lack of lens shift is a serious drawback, as is the strange design of the focus wheel over the lens; for some reason, blue light emits from it, creating an unwanted visual effect.

We measured a constant 58 decibel fan noise while using the MH530, but in practice we barely noticed it while watching the movie (although this is largely due to the decent, separate sound system). When designing a home theatre system, it is important to build the right sound system and choose the right home theatre amplifier. It’s a good idea to have at least a 5.1 sound system if you want a true cinematic experience. However, getting the perfect speakers does not yet guarantee optimal acoustics. It is definitely recommended to place sound-absorbing and diffuser panels on both the walls and the ceiling to help control bass sounds and reflections.
The verdict

Verdict
The BenQ MH530 is a compact and portable projector that delivers satisfying visuals across a wide range of lighting conditions. While its contrast ratio and black levels are not its strongest points, the projector compensates with vibrant brightness, solid detail, and reliable overall image quality.
That said, the persistent “rainbow effect”—a known limitation of single-chip DLP systems—prevents it from becoming a top pick for video purists or sensitive viewers. However, for users seeking a versatile, budget-friendly projector for both movies and presentations, the MH530 represents a practical and well-rounded choice.
