Smart Features & Adaptive Sound

One of the standout features of the Sonos Roam is its Trueplay tuning, which automatically detects your environment and adjusts the sound output accordingly—whether you’re indoors or outside. This ensures balanced, room-aware audio without the need for manual adjustments. Additionally, the Sound Swap feature allows you to seamlessly transfer playback to the nearest Sonos speaker at the press of a button, making it a perfect fit for users with a multi-room Sonos system.

Durability & Battery Life

With an IP67 rating, the Sonos Roam is dust-tight and fully water-resistant, capable of withstanding immersion in water for up to 30 minutes. This makes it a dependable companion for travel, outdoor use, or wet environments. One minor issue is the lack of auto shut-off, which can drain the battery if streaming apps like Spotify or Tidal are left running—though this may be resolved in future firmware updates.

The Roam delivers up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a full charge and can retain its battery for up to 10 days in idle mode. For charging, users have multiple options:

  • Sonos magnetic wireless charger (sold separately)
  • Qi-compatible wireless chargers
  • USB-C cable (included in the box)

Design & Portability

Compact and thoughtfully designed, the Roam’s shape allows it to be placed vertically or horizontally, adapting to tight spaces or styled setups. Its lightweight build makes it incredibly easy to carry, store, or position wherever sound is needed—whether on a bookshelf, a backpack, or a beach towel.

The Roam has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, which means it can function as a portable speaker as well as part of a multi-room Sonos system, as well as a smart speaker thanks to Google Assistant and Alexa voice control.

Seamless Connectivity & Auto Tuning

The Sonos Roam excels in effortless connectivity, thanks to automatic switching between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. As you move from outdoors to indoors, the speaker instantly transitions to your Wi-Fi network—without needing to power cycle or manually reconnect. This makes it a smooth and intuitive choice for users who move frequently between different environments.

Whether you’re connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, the built-in Auto Trueplay feature continuously monitors and fine-tunes the sound profile based on your current surroundings. This ensures consistently optimal playback quality, no matter where you’re listening.

Impressive Audio in a Compact Frame

Weighing just 0.43 kg, the Roam is impressively lightweight, yet it delivers powerful, room-filling sound that defies its small form. The bass is deep and bold, perfect for outdoor use where ambient noise can often overpower lighter speakers. While the Roam may not reach the rhythmic precision of high-end audiophile systems, its muscular low end and overall clarity make it an excellent performer in the portable speaker category.

Design & Durability

Shaped longer and slimmer than its bulkier sibling, the Sonos Move, the Roam’s size is comparable to a standard water bottle, making it extremely travel-friendly. It’s built to withstand outdoor use, with rugged casing and a claimed water resistance of up to 30 minutes underwater (IP67 certified).

Though Sonos advertises full waterproofing, we recommend caution with submersion, as in real-world conditions many speakers tend to be more splash- or drip-resistant than their specs suggest. Still, the Roam is clearly tough enough to handle rain, spills, dust, and everyday wear—ideal for both home use and off-the-grid adventures.

User-Friendly Controls & Smart Pairing

The front of the Roam features a clean, white embossed Sonos logo, with an LED indicator above it to display connection status. A second LED at the opposite end shows battery life, making it easy to track charging needs at a glance.

On the left side of the speaker, you’ll find tactile physical buttons for:

  • Volume control
  • Play/Pause
  • Microphone on/off toggle

The button layout is intuitive:

  • Double-press Play/Pause to skip to the next track
  • Triple-press to return to the previous track
  • Hold down Play/Pause to pair with other Sonos speakers

These raised, physical buttons are easier to use than the touch-sensitive controls on the larger Sonos Move, particularly for visually impaired users or outdoor settings where tactile feedback is essential.

Design & Placement Options

Available in “Shadow Black” and “Lunar White,” the Sonos Roam features precision-engineered honeycomb grilles that contribute to its premium appearance. While it doesn’t offer true 360-degree sound, its angled speaker design provides excellent directional audio.

The Roam can be placed:

  • Vertically, saving space and offering a more focused sound projection
  • Horizontally, for greater stability on uneven surfaces

An optional wireless charging stand is also available, enhancing usability and aesthetics for home use.

Music Services & Streaming Support

The Roam integrates with the Sonos S2 app, granting access to a wide range of streaming services, including:

  • Apple AirPlay 2 (iOS 11.4+)
  • Spotify
  • Apple Music
  • Deezer
  • Tidal
  • YouTube Music
  • 7Digital
  • Sonos Radio
  • And many more

With this broad support and seamless app control, the Roam offers flexible, high-quality playback across all your favorite platforms.

Sound of Sonos Roam

We tested the Sonos Roam speaker in our indoor office and outdoors also. Overall, we were very pleased with the performance and sound of the small speaker, but we wanted to hear a little more from the middle and lower tones as some of the details were lost due to the powerful bass; therefore, if you are using Roam indoors, you may want to adjust the EQ settings to increase the treble. Of course, the acoustic characteristics of the given room also determine the sound of the speakers.

In all rooms and offices, it is recommended to acoustic treat the walls and ceiling with sound-absorbing panels and acoustic diffusers for ideal sound balance. Do not forget about the floor surface either, place acoustic, densely woven soundproof carpets to avoid reflections. Improving the acoustics of the room is very useful in any room, as even the best, most expensive sound systems do not sound good if the room is echoed or there is too much bass sound. In the case of the Sonos Roam, the low frequencies work very well outdoors, where there are no walls for the sound to bounce back, but indoors the bass has a little overpowered effect that spoils musical enjoyment.

The Sonos Roam lacks the precision and rhythm of audiophile speakers, but you can’t expect a comprehensive and perfect sound from a speaker of this size.

The transducer in the speaker converts the electrical signal into a wave-shaped change in air pressure – the sound you hear – and this movement requires space as well as space inside the speaker to move as much air as possible. Sonos’ designers managed to reduce the size by making the transducer part of the enclosure itself, making the speaker smaller, lighter, while still delivering sound quality. Sound Swap is one of the best features on Sonos Roam that allows you to transfer music from Sonos Roam to the nearest available Sonos speaker and vice versa. We tried Sound Swap paired with two Sonos One speakers and a Sonos Sub subwoofer and it worked smoothly. As mentioned, this function also works the other way around, so if you hold down the play / pause button, the sound will be transferred from another speaker to the Roam.

Even though manufacturer focused on portability, Roam is very much part of the Sonos system, which means you can use it as part of a multi-room audio setup, or pair two speakers to obtain stereo sound.

To start using Sonos Roam, you need to connect to a Wi-Fi network through the Sonos S2 APP. It only took a few minutes to set up the speaker.

Roam also works with Google Assistant and Alexa voice controls. With the voice assistant of your choice you can turn on the speaker, control other smart home devices, all you have to do is connect to Wi-Fi.

Setting up Sonos Roam with Google Assistant is super easy: the Sonos APP directs the user to the Google Home APP to make the settings. We found that the microphones were able to record our voice quite clearly, even when the music was playing at a medium volume.

Summary

Despite its compact size, the Sonos Roam delivers impressive audio performance, particularly in the bass range. Equipped with two Class-H amplifiers, a high-efficiency motor, a dedicated center speaker, and a precision tweeter, the Roam achieves strong output and extended range. While it doesn’t fill a room as completely as the larger Sonos Move, its clever acoustic design makes it one of the best-sounding portable speakers we’ve tested to date.

The Roam integrates effortlessly into any existing Sonos system, making it a great option for those already in the Sonos ecosystem. It’s especially well-suited for outdoor use, where its robust bass and rugged design shine. That said, bass frequencies may feel overly sharp in small indoor spaces, and while sound quality is excellent overall, rhythmic precision could be improved.

Voice assistants like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are supported—but only over Wi-Fi. They do not function over Bluetooth, which may limit smart features on the go.

The premium price point puts it above many competing portable speakers, but the build quality, feature set, and Sonos integration help justify the investment for users seeking versatility, smart functionality, and serious sound performance.
