SVS SB-4000 Active, Sealed Subwoofer Test
SVS subwoofers are well-known among home theater enthusiasts and music lovers alike. The brand’s popularity stems from its high-quality design and its ability to deliver deep, accurate, and powerful bass across a wide frequency range.
Now let’s take a closer look at the SB-4000 model.

The SB-4000 is an active subwoofer with a sealed enclosure and a clean rectangular design with subtly rounded edges. At first glance, its substantial weight of 46.4 kg isn’t immediately apparent—but it becomes clear upon learning that the massive magnet alone weighs nearly 17 kg.
The subwoofer is built with a robust, extra-thick MDF cabinet, housing an ultra-rigid driver cone made from a fiberglass and paper composite, reinforced by a wide aluminum die-cast basket that resembles protective armor. The unit also features a steel grille cover and rests on durable rubber feet, enhancing both stability and vibration isolation.

Air flows through trapezoidal vent openings, aiding in effective heat dissipation. The voice coil is a 3-inch aluminum wire, wound in eight layers, designed to handle extreme movement and power. SVS refers to the cone’s excursion limit as XMech, allowing for an impressive 76.2 mm of peak-to-peak excursion without causing any damage—an extraordinary engineering feat for a sealed subwoofer.

The rear panel of the SB-4000 is kept deliberately simple, featuring clean line-level inputs and outputs, RCA and XLR connectors, a main power switch, and an IEC power socket. Unlike earlier models from the brand, this subwoofer includes a built-in display, which can be controlled using a small infrared remote control.
However, control is also available via Bluetooth, using iOS or Android smart devices through a dedicated mobile app. In our experience, the app-based control was significantly more convenient and intuitive than using the remote.

There are a wide variety of settings available in the menu, such as volume, display off, cut slope, or low pass filter frequency control… etc. A 3-band parametric EQ calibration program also aids fine-tuning, frequency transmission from 19 to 310 Hz, Sledge amplifier at 1200 watts and “D” class. It is also extremely easy to integrate into our sound system thanks to the settings.

It has been given a simple, modern, cube shape design. There is a blue LED display on the front panel, which can be dimmed if it bothers you. If you want a more elegant design, you can also choose the glossy, piano lacquered surface, but then you have to cope with the fingerprints, and unfortunately dust also deposits on the glossy surface quickly.
It doesn’t matter how large the room is for such a high-performance subwoofer, it can provide the best performance in rooms of 20-25 square meters.
Advantages of active subwoofers with sealed enclosure

Active speakers come with a built-in amplifier, allowing for high output performance and quick transient response. They also require shorter cable runs, which helps minimize signal loss. Another key benefit of active speakers is their space-saving design, as there’s no need for an external amplifier.
The sealed enclosure system features a completely closed design, where the air inside acts as a spring when the speaker diaphragm moves. This results in tight, accurate, and well-controlled bass response. However, due to the complexity and precision involved in manufacturing, sealed subwoofers generally fall into a higher price category.

We tested the SB-4000 subwoofer integrated into a home theatre system playing the movie Legend first released in cinemas in 2015. We tested the subwoofer with a pair of Dynaudio Confidence 60 stationary speakers and a Denon AVC X6700 home theatre amplifier.
In the approximately 28-square-foot home theatre room acoustics were virtually flawless according to our measurements. The owner did a very thorough job in this concern when designing and furnishing his cinema room. Printed acoustic panels on the walls, diffuser elements, as well as thick-woven sound-absorbing curtains and a thick, densely woven carpet also contributed to the perfect acoustics. With the help of curtains, not only the acoustics can be improved, but also complete darkness can be achieved, which is a very important aspect when it comes to reproduce cinema like conditions.

Sound
The SB-4000 delivered a clear, powerful, accurate, and detailed sound. It reproduced deep, punchy bass with no noticeable distortion, even at high volumes, and the dynamics were excellent. While watching Live by Night (2016), starring Ben Affleck, we experienced a wide soundstage, rich detail, and a spacious, cinematic atmosphere. The bass was full-bodied, extremely tight, and thoroughly engaging.
We also tested the subwoofer’s musical capabilities by listening to Monster by Imagine Dragons and Feeling Good by Michael Bublé. The SB-4000 produced deep, room-shaking bass, maintaining clarity without distortion, even at higher volume levels. The room was filled effortlessly with sound, and we even noticed bass nuances we had never heard before in these tracks. At times, the bass felt slightly over-controlled and regulated, but this was a minor observation rather than a significant flaw.

Conclusion
The SB-4000 subwoofer is a true heavyweight champion—not just because of its substantial physical weight, but due to its exceptionally powerful, muscular bass performance. Throughout our testing, we experienced zero distortion, even at high volumes, with the sub maintaining a clear and articulate sound.
A minor downside is the lack of automatic room calibration. While tools like Room EQ Wizard can be used for manual adjustment, built-in calibration would have made setup more convenient. On the positive side, control via the mobile app is intuitive and much easier than using the physical remote. At times, we wished for slightly freer, more unrestrained bass, as the SB-4000’s output can feel a bit too controlled—but honestly, if that’s the worst we can say, it’s hardly a flaw.
The combination of outstanding sound quality, a rugged, nearly indestructible build, and premium-grade components justifies the higher price tag. This is not a budget subwoofer—but it’s undoubtedly a top-tier choice for serious audio enthusiasts.
